19 million Americans live in a food desert

A food desert is an area that lacks access to healthy and affordable food options.

Low-income and low-access data is taken into account when designating a food desert, as well as having no food establishment (grocer, supermarket, or the like) within 1 mile in an urban setting or 10 miles in a rural area. While 19 million Americans live in a food desert, over 40 million live in a designated low-income/low-access area.

That's 13% of the entire US population that have unstable and unreliable food options.

Over 40 million live in a USDA designated low-income/low-access area which have few options for healthy foods.

meaning over 33% of residents must trale to reach a grocery

Food deserts are determined by access to food (measured in mileage for urban areas and number of stores in an area for rural) as well as public transportation or vehicle avaialbilty.

Low-income areas are disproportionally affected and food insecurity creates another barrier for kids to get healthy foods while growing.

But while roughly 82% of food deserts are in urban areas, rural communities aren’t exactly exempt.1 According to the USDA, an estimated 335,000 people in the United States live more than 20 miles from a supermarket.

Food deserts exist all over the country, but they are more common in the South and Midwest, with lower-income states like Louisiana or Mississippi seeing a much higher percentage of residents lacking access to healthy food, compared to states like Oregon or New Hampshire.

If you’re really hungry, then how can you be—as many of them are—overweight? The answer is “this paradox that hunger and obesity are two sides of the same coin,” says Melissa Boteach, vice president of the Poverty and Prosperity Program of the Center for American Progress, “people making trade-offs between food that’s filling but not nutritious and may actually contribute to obesity.” For many of the hungry in America, the extra pounds that result from a poor diet are collateral damage—an unintended side effect of hunger itself.

Fight Childhood Obesity is a nonprofit organization focused on delivering healthy foods locally to children affected by food insecurity or who live in food deserts. 40 million Americans live in low access/low income areas where finding healthy and fresh food is exceedingly difficult. About half of those affected are children who rely on processed and packaged foods packed with sugars and preservatives. Our goal is to get those children on the right path early and create long-lasting healthy habits by delivering weekly produce boxes straight from our farms. Each box with have the recommended daily serving of fresh fruits and vegetables to feed a family of 4 for a full week. All of our produce is grown hydroponically using nothing but nutrients and water and shipped the same day it is harvested. There are no pesticides, insecticides, additives or modifications; Just pure, real food. Our mission is to combat hunger by making healthy food available to all children, while extending their lives and enriching their relationship with food.
